creating and using custom-named animation activities with barebones animation library

because i'm using a different movement scheme than dota controls (wasd movement), i want to name my character movement sequences something other than ACT_DOTA_RUN, for example ACT_ND_WALK_X_AXIS_GRENADE. but when i set a custom animation activity name, barebones gives an error (something about arithmetic). am i limited to using the built-in dota sequence names? or can i get around this somehow by playing animations by their animation name instead of their activity name?
